PollHow many times have you lost data on a crashed hard/usb disk for lack of backups?

It happened me twice. It taught me to do regular backups. It sucks to lose your digital life up to that point.

I do a backup of the most important stuff once a month, but I have lost a lot of data before I learned that. At least thrice my storys and music was lost

approximately 14 times.

Hard disk and USB drives aren't really comparable. I've only lost data on a USB drive - I refuse to use them now, using SD cards only. But you only lose about 1 GB of data - a hard drive death would be devastating in comparison. (Although it might be relaxing to have a fresh start).

@Lee J Haywood: I doubt there's anything relaxing about a fresh start that way. It would feel like getting brain damage.

I'm very anal about backups. There was one time I really needed it but a lot of my backed up data was corrupted.

@Patofeo: I never took the effort to look up the anal word. I kinda dislike it for expressing personality traits. But the origin is quite interesting, Freudian psychology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anal_stage

To be correct, it should be specified if the trait we refer to is being anal-retentive or anal-expulsive. But please, please, the anus shouldn't be used to describe personalities. English has a plethora of already perfect words for that.

@Wonkobox: You use Ubuntu. SBackup is great for backing up your home directory documents. If you want more control, you can use PyBackPack. Run it as <tt>gksudo pybackpack if you want to backup system directories. Both use rdiff-backup, which is space-efficient because it stores only the changed parts instead of whole copies. That also means that it is not so CPU efficient, because of the large amount of data compared. Reserve a couple of hours for your weekly backup.

@BorgClown: wow!! Is that a joke??? (RE: Anal_Stage)

@BorgClown: I retract 'anal' and throw in 'compulsive'

@Patofeo: Yes, it's true - Freud was a joke.

Freud did good in trying to systematize psychology, but his theories are so wacky nowadays. They're still good if you feel anally-expulsive and need some paper.

As a future psychologist, I concur with "Freud is a joke."
