PollDo you remember high school as socially tough?

Just saw a video on FaceBook of my nephew being bullied. The bully hid my nephew's school backpack, made him look for it, then showed it to him and kicked the backpack around to finally toss it on a garbage can. Then he shielded himself with a group of girls who verbally attacked my nephew when he left the backpack on his seat and questioned the bully about his behavior. It's a short, out of context clip, so I'm abstaining from conjecturing, I'm just glad my nephew handled the situation well considering the peer pressure to start a fight, and the unexpected and loud girl army. That reminded me that high school is a though place, much more socially hostile than college or the workplace.

Is that 16-18ish?! If so, that's 'college' for us in the UK, and no, not at all. But I'm happy with a small group of friends, which was already kind of in place before I got there, so could ignore them... I found our secondary school (11-16ish) to be the worst for social issues (and my friend I'm talking to says the same). Even though I was in a small hippy school it is retrospectively quite shocking how bad the bullying and bitchy groupness was.

High school is 14/15 to 17/18 according to wikipedia. I guess UK equivalent would be late part of secondary school and college/6th form. For me it wasn't, but I basically didn't give a fuck about other people :P Like thelevellers said, secondary school is definitely the worst - little kids and college people tend not to make a fuss, but secondary school is full of twats. If my sister's experience is anything to go by, it's worse since I went through it :(

Should have mentioned the age range, 15-18 as Melchior said. We call it Middle or Secondary school here, but US High School is a close equivalent.

I suppose you could describe school as an environment for social learning rather than just 'tough'. Bullying isn't really 'social' though. I only really remember one bully, and only had perhaps one big incident with him, and I managed to avoid after-school fights by simply not showing up. In theory children splinter into groups at school and hopefully you remember your friends more than anyone else.
