Fire pistons are small tinder lighters that work by fast compression of air. They don't require more energy than your own hands, and are amazingly quick and effective. They're so simple you could make one MacGyver style. http://www.onagocag.com/piston.html http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/content/kitchenscience/exp/fire-piston-1/

It might be useful knowledge if you found yourself thrown back in time, but how many flames can you get out of an ordinary gas-based cigarette lighter? It's no bigger, and probably more reliable. I have 2 right in front of me that I found lying around on various nights, and they give a big flame on demand with almost no effort and no preparation.

Oh, and did you know that the production of compressed gas is one of the biggest contributors of greenhouse gases (in terms of enormous energy consumption)?

That is a problem only if you give a damn about greenhouse gases.

Gas lighters, psha. Fire pistons FTW! Nothing beats the awesome factor of slapping a hand-sized device and have instant tinder. The commercial ones are made to last, they can outlast many lighters.
