I don't agree with it myself, but me and my friend had this discussion while driving about 600 miles for a job interview. I like the idea, that if you deregulate, then stupid people will be stupid and crash, and smart people will self regulate and be fine. But realistically the stupid people will crash into everyone indiscriminantly. My friend was also interested in the idea of voluntary tax payments...

In theory this already happens. The number of road accidents is already ridiculously high, in spite of safety measures, so you'd expect stupid people to be responsible for the majority of those accidents if stupidity is all it takes. In practice, we all suffer from errors of judgement, and die due to the mistakes of others (so the stupid kill the smart - wrong time, wrong place). Also, there are the problems caused by differences in reaction times. There's no absolute cut-off point for alcohol that switches you from safe to unsafe. And then there's the effect of toxoplasma gondii, which is believed to be responsible for a lot of road accidents.

I give up , what is toxoplasma gondii? I can look it up but you put it out there Lee :^) I should have read this before I made my last comment on the gay thread. All the heretics could be round up and let loose on the Autobahn, or some place similar. The last 10% that remained alive would be allowed to live just because they showed enough ingenuity to survive. In reality however, smarter people should survive better on highways - they have a tendency for better health through nutrition & exercise, which should give them better reflexes, and of course, many believe that intelligence is only an ability to predict outcomes better than others and prepare in what ever manner is necessary to survive - avoid large trucks on curves, stay away from erratic drivers, not drive 90 miles an hour on highway 1 in the Big Sur area of California.

I love that idea SWA! Maybe up the ante a little? Have an intelligence test at 18, if you fail you get to take part in a Battle Royale style situation, any survivors will be assumed to have screwed up the test and allowed into further life... Now there's a way to dramatically cut population ;-)

@Saywhatagain: Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common human parasites in the world, infecting between 30 and 60 per cent of the global population. Any mammal can be infected - even whales - but it can only reproduce in cats. It releases eggs that are spread in cat faeces, and if these end up in moist soil they can remain infective for 18 months. A passing rat or mouse might pick up the infection from the contaminated soil and if a cat kills and eats them the life cycle continues. It manipulates brains of rodents - natural intermediate hosts. Rats and mice behave more recklessly when they are infected, seeking novel situations instead of being cautious as normal. An infected rodent is even attracted to cat urine, and given a death wish that makes sure it ends up inside a cat's stomach. What made people sit up and take notice was research published showing that humans with a latent infection are 2.7 times more likely to be involved in a car accident.

aren't they also more sexual?

Not that I've read, although Wikipedia suggests "people not infected with the parasite found women with toxoplasma more attractive than women who don't have toxoplasma."

Interesting... Weird how I have never heard of something so 'big'! And how it could affect humans (though that isn't surprising so much...) I have to say that Basilisks comment out of context on the site activity page made me giggle... :)

Wait, was he asking if stupid people are more sexual or those infected with toxoplasma gondii?
