SurveyHaving friends of the opposite sex is important.

I ask mainly because I had a realisation the other day that all of my female friends are ex's (ok, one is ex f-buddy, but near enough!). I have two (one is new) girls I know, but don't consider particularly close that aren't, but thanks to my somewhat inbred group of friends and my own personal uselessness at making new friends, I have no 'independent' female friends. I have also realised that I missed female companionship of the friendly nature as much, if not more so, than the intimate kind. Bah. Still, hopefully a spare theatre ticket I should have coming my way soon will change one of those statuses! ;)

in reality, I have very few friends and they are all male.

It's down to your personality, and largely shaped by your past. I personally focus on having exclusively female friends if I can manage it, yet have mostly failed at this and men do try to be my friend to some extent even though my interest in them is much less. I also have a female friend who has terrible trouble making female friends... I'm not sure why it would necessarily be important to have friends of the opposite sex. It's good practice for relationships, at least, and it's healthy from an intellectual standpoint because you're almost guaranteed to have different thought processes and disagree on things.

Opposite-sex friends rarely peer-pressure you, at least in my limited experience. Same-sex buddies are more likely to pressure you into some sort of expectation. Curiously, same-sex friendship seems to appear almost by itself.

I guess I say important because I feel that the different view of life and the lack of certain kids of peer pressure is important! I think I would aim for certainly a majority of female friends if I could be arsed, but I would always want (and need) a number of male friends, if only because it's hard to find girls that are up for the same things as guys (climbing trees, MASSIVE random bike rides, etc). I would agree with you, Borg, that same-sex friendships really don't take ANY effort, even with people that aren't my kinda person I can quickly find something(s) in common enough easily enough. As soon as there's a gender difference it takes just that little more thought - even when I'm not trying to get boobs..!

I guess being friendly with the opposite sex would not hinder myself greatly. I have one who keeps talking to me. I guess I should try and foster the relationship.

I guess we kinda like guessing a lot here.

Well it is a discussion site. Its missing the little scribble pad on the side so I don't have an opportunity to diagram everything for you so guessing is what I do.
