Although country music is awful, I can be persuaded to like bits of it. I did listen to Nanci Griffith at university, since someone there had an album of hers, and so now I know many of those songs I think they're okay.

I've never understood Country's stigma, so few English speakers like it. I figure it's something akin to the stigma Cumbia and other popular styles have among Spanish speakers: Not wanting to be associated with the people who listen and dance the genres. Cumbia is a style born in Colombia, and the rhythm is quite catchy. Foreigners appear to like it, despide the general dising. Here is a couple dancing it in a recent reality show here in Mexico: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl0E8pi4fzg

@BorgClown: Cumbia seems to involve a lot of twirling (your link is dead). Reggaeton and perreo are far more entertaining to watch, but require an entirely different type of music of course.

I don't particularly like country music, but that's because I have had classical voice training and a subsequent dislike for notes that are off-key. And sung with a redneck accent, ANY note is off-key. :p
