QuestionDo you guys know how easy it is to locate someone you've met online? I don't want to do this, I'm wondering how easy it would be for someone to find me if they wanted to. Just out of curiosity.

To find you, or for you to find someone else? To locate someone physically is extremely difficult. People vary enormously in their presence on the Internet and the amount of information they leave about themselves, as well as the difficulty of tying it together. From the other site I know your first name and the month and year you were born, as well as your e-mail address. Since you're on my site I can also look up your IP address (someone could get this my e-mailing you a link if they wanted) - it's not terribly useful, but there are sites that will give a very crude location for an IP address. So I get Longview or Tyler, Texas - depending which site I use to search... it's very vague. Another thing people can do is use both your user name and real name to find you on other sites, via Google, then gain more information - especially if you re-use a user name. I've variously managed to get someone's birth date, Facebook profile and dating profiles this way, with one Google search leading to another.

Oh, also... with one person I managed to use their forenames to work out their surname with Facebook and then with their full name Google gave up a work document that gave their job title and full address of their workplace.

As Lee says, the more consistent you are (same email for everything, same alias, same details on social websites), the more easy is for someone to look you up on search engines. If you are not that predictable, your IP address can be associated with your phone number, which in turn can be associated with your mailing address. But getting the telephone number out of the IP address means having a judicial order to show to your Internet Service Provider. There's lots of gotchas even if you are careful, it's better not to expect full anonymity. For example, imagine a guy who is as careful as he can be, yet he's stupid enough to use DynDNS to disclose his IP address to everyone who types, I don't know, <t>ping borgclown.dyndns.org. What a tool!

@BorgClown: It could be worse... you could publish your PC's host name on your web site, as I've done. (-: <tt>http://freedns.afraid.org

I'm not, but I know most of the SBers went there. Pity you don't have anything to do with that site, I would have been too easy. Can you give us a hint?

If you know which university someone attends, it's pretty useless information for the most part. If, on the other hand, you know which department they're in... you could potentially stalk them by showing up at lectures, etc. - but you'd have a difficult time starting a conversation if you found them.
