The overacting, plot holes, and the overall incoherence/idiocy of the characters of most soap operas is appalling.

I notice you used the word 'most' - that happens a lot with opinions, inevitably. Is there a soap that you think is worth watching? Even an old one?

Here they are called telenovelas. As usual, they suck, with the notable exception of the ones written by Caridad Bravo, who are carefully plotted and very well produced: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caridad_Bravo_Adams

We don't really get US-style soaps here. My favourite soap used to be Shortland Street, from New Zealand - which at least had the advantage of being about doctors and nurses - until I was forced to give it up. In recent years, I've quite liked Desperate Housewives which is part drama and part soap, but even that takes too much time to keep watching.

Oh well, if we accept that reality TV is acted (and it is), they gotta be the scum the lowest form of acting scrapes from its shoe.

You got me. But soap operas that promote products are even worse, so we're 2-1, winning me =)

Somehow I get the feeling that Soaps are only 1 notch below pornos, as far as viewer satisfaction goes. Soaps never go ahead and "deliver the goods." Pornos use identical plot pretenses without all the necessary dialog.

@Liverwort: Soaps are a summary of the things that happen in everyday life, albeit occurring more frequently in some cases. They appeal to the average person by covering relationship issues, such as infidelity, and attacks, etc. http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg17823955.100-sex-lies-and-eastenders.html

Liverwort is right in the instant gratification though. The usual plot rarely make sense, like porn movies.
