Old news, but the message is timeless. Scientific study of chess masters confirms that hard work and dedication pay off. I love this study.

Oh, but the key is challenging yourself constantly, otherwise hard work is not enough. I believe this is the article that popularized the Herbert A. Simon's 10-year rule, "It takes approximately a decade of heavy labor to master any field".

@BorgClown: that may not apply to consecutive years. I've been playing sax for about 10 years now but I would not consider myself an expert.

For some reason I was convinced that it was only 3 years.

also read "this is your brain on music" if you are really interested on another viewpoint of the topic.

@Lee J Haywood: it's estimated that you can become an expert in 10k hours. 3 years is diligent work and learning to reach that 10k mark.

It's ten years of at least 4 daily hours, based on amateur to word-level chess players. That amounts to almost 15000 hours of tackling projects that are just above you capabilities. I can understand why world-masters are so rare, it's a freaking huge workout to be one. As the article says, most of us do that until we reach a level we are comfortable, like professional, or being better than our friends.
