No, but I hear the jokes. Microwaved melon doesn't sound appetizing.

How the hell do you not own a micro wave. That is actually one of the few possessions of worth that I have. A computer, tv, and microwave...

The ones my mother had always blew up when exposed to the steam in the kitchen. When I moved in, I had a lodger who got a microwave for free - it blew up in my kitchen, apparently due to the steam. I had my back to it at the time, and when it went 'bang' the back of my head went numb... I guess I could have one, especially since my oven doesn't work, but manage fine without one. I don't have a toaster either - I just use the grill.

Talk about bad luck. I've never sees a microwave blow once, not even on video. And I have put my share of non-safe materials on it. Cans, aluminum paper, cutlery, CDs, ceramic. No living things (not even babies) so far.

Presumably the magnetron just doesn't like steam - it is surprising that more people don't have this problem. I've only ever used them for re-heating, so I wouldn't have much use for one. Marshmellows do a nice effect in them, but it's tough to get vegetarian ones. (-:

Actually, they don't "blow up" they just go "bang!" very loudly. I can only imagine what the EMP given off is like (-: although it's possibly just the shock that makes you feel strange.

Interesting. That sounds more like a shortcut than a steam explosion, because steam has to accumulate pressure for it to blow. Did you get to see the remains? Did it still work?

How do you get steam in a microwave? I boil water in a microwave and never have it blow.

The steam fills the kitchen, not the inside of the microwave. I don't think there's any visible difference afterwards, it just doesn't work.

It must be a short circuit then. I managed to get a boom by connecting a reversed transformer to a power outlet. It didn't blew the fuses though.

@Baslisks: It has to be a smooth container, a glass bowl is good. Also, the spinning plate disturbs the water. If you want to do it, do it outside, too much risk for electrocution in the kitchen.

I recall a site with pictures of superheated water in a microwave, but I can't find it.

ah the wonderful spinning disk. It does serve a purpose..

A glass of water is very hot but drinkable after two minutes. After 5 minutes (I can't recall our actual measure) it should be boiling or superheated. But it's hard to get it to suddenly blow because once bubbles start to form, they propagate, and you lose the superheating.

A friend of mine did the experiment, I was just watching. It turns out that Microwaves can take a lot of punishment as long as they're heating something. But if you turn them on empty the magnetron feedbacks and cooks itself.
