Lately I've been dreaming that I'm driving my truck, loaded with my wife and relatives, including a newborn baby, over an extremely perilous and narrow road. Suddenly the bakes fail, I apply then and they feel like stepping on a balloon. I think, "No problem, I can keep on track and finish this hard part in a few minutes", so I don't tell the other to not scare them. But they feel my nervousness and start to chat and pass the baby and generally obstruct my vision, so I can barely see if I'm about to fall over or not. Three times this week I've woken up stepping on the imaginary brake. Sometimes I manage to slow down the truck by putting it on neutral and turning it off, or putting it on park and letting the transmission grind it down. But each time the vehicle is less responsive to this desperate procedures. It's really unsettling, because I don't quite get what my subconscious is trying to tell me... Just woke up from that one.

All i know is that the hand brake of my truck has been busted for years, so in an emergency like that it wouldn't help, but it never has given me nightmares before. Also, I recently started to run, so body, specially the legs, are achy all the time. Maybe it's these two things, but something doesn't fit. And being completely skeptical, I'm not going to modify my plans of traveling these weekend because of a nightmare. Mmmh, there's also a hurricane near my parent's these weekend... But there's no dangerous road everywhere.

You should think of it as your mind testing out possibilities and responses for potential threats. It's not trying to 'tell' you anything, it's taking existing knowledge and combining it in novel ways to help you see connections you wouldn't get to make whilst awake. I tend to think that we shouldn't remember our dreams, in the sense that if you wake up normally they are quickly forgotten. It's only when your REM sleep is interrupted, mid-dream, that you remember - so don't pay too much attention to them. It's unlikely that you'll have the dreams for much longer - eventually other things in your life will need analysing, so something else will take their place.

@Lee J Haywood: The funny thing is that normally I'm able to identify the causes and stop the weird dreams. I call it "getting the message", always something along the lines of not neglecting a medic check, not forgetting to pick someone at the airport, being too excited because of a big travel, etc. But since I couldn't when it started, it grew into a stronger dream, a nightmare. It has been years since my previous one, I remembered the strong emotion of nightmares as thrilling, but it's actually annoying.

I have a reoccurring dream about a tornado hitting my house and I wake up right before it's time to die. I haven't had it for a few months, but I hate it when it comes back.

when i was a kid i had a recurring nightmare which repeated regularly over the course of many years. it involved being stuck in a room with black and white checkered walls, floor and ceiling, with no windows and no door. there was some kind of magic word (and once i remembered it after waking up but forgot again later) and if i said the magic word the room would begin to shrink until it crushed me. i would sometimes spend great amounts of time in the room, not saying the word because i didn't want to get crushed, but eventually i would always say it because just sitting there would drive me crazy.

@Beeba: That has to be one of the best nightmares so far. I wonder if you got bored at the room and got to sleep in your dream.

Artemis, I've probably had more dreams about tornadoes than about anything else. I have no recurrent dreams or nightmares, but that theme has popped up throughout my lifetime.
